After the incident in Alaska, Gregg was determined to continue building on his newly produced X-Gaiter by committing himself to design an entire line of high-quality outerwear specifically designed to protect and assist those who have a passion for outdoor exploration.įor the first couple of years, as Outdoor Research was developing the founder Gregg had the vision to expand his product line from merely the X-Gaiter into more substantial forms of outdoor protective wear items and clothing pieces such as headwear, handwear, mitts, pants, and much more. The X-Gaiter was the first true product manufactured by Outdoor Research as it would act as the inspiration for Gregg to continue developing the brand that is known as Outdoor Research today. Ron Gregg’s solution to the troubles his friend faced while attempting to traverse the climate near Alaska was known as the X-Gaiter which was a combination of functionality, insulation, and performance. That moment can be contributed as the singular catalyst which propelled Gregg to begin his search for finding the perfect solution to taking on rather harsh outdoor climates so that he would never have to deal with another terrifying situation like that again. Eventually, Gregg’s friend would be lifted to safety by way of an airlift where he would get the help that he needed to stay alive. His partner’s situation came about largely due to the fact that he was wearing gaiters that were very poorly designed and came with little to no insulation in order to protect him from the treacherous temperatures of their surroundings. Just 4 years prior to the launch of Outdoor Research, Gregg found himself at the behest of a terrible situation while traversing the Alaska Denali’s where his climbing partner was suffering from frostbite due to extremely cold temperatures in the local area.
